Dental Crowns Questions

before and after dental crowns

Serving St. Joseph, Niles, South Bend, Kalamazoo and all of Southwest Michigan

Is a tooth that receives a dental crown safe from future cavities?

If a dental crown is used to restore a tooth that is damaged from heavy decay, St. Joseph cosmetic dentist Dr. Sven Erickson will use special instruments to remove all of the bacteria and damaged portions of the tooth. Once the dental crown is permanently bonded, the underlying tooth structure is more sheltered from bacteria. However, damaging bacteria can still work their way into the tiny crevasses of the tooth, causing harm. You should always make sure to brush and floss your crowned teeth to reduce the chance of future cavities underneath.

When might a dental crown be recommended?

Dental crowns can be used to strengthen a tooth that has suffered moderate to severe damage, either as a result of decay or physical injury. Tooth crowns may be used to:

  • Protect a weak tooth from breakage
  • Restore a broken or severely worn tooth
  • Cover a tooth with a large filling, particularly when there is very little natural tooth structure remaining
  • Cover misshapen teeth
  • Provide a prosthetic tooth for a dental implant
  • Provide anchors for a dental bridge

What is the purpose of the temporary crown?

During your first dental crown appointment, Dr. Erickson will remove some tooth structure in order to make room for the new crown. In many cases, this removal of tooth structure might interfere with eating or stand out when you smile. A temporary crown is placed so you can have a normal smile appearance and use your tooth to chew properly until the permanent crown is back from our lab. Dr. Erickson will make sure the temporary crown is shaped to fit your bite so that it feels comfortable and natural.

How much do dental crowns cost?

The fees for your dental crown will depend on the location of the tooth, the amount of preparation needed, and the intricacy of the final design. During your first cosmetic dentistry consultation with Dr. Erickson, we can provide you with a rough cost estimate to be revised upon completion of a full oral examination.
